Waiting for Deliverance
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (September, 2000)
Author: Betsy Urban
Average review score:

A historical novel for teens that delivers.
Orphaned at birth, Deliverance "Livy" Pelton has lived all of her fourteen years with her aunt, uncle, and cousins. When her uncle decides to move the family west in 1793, Livy just wants to stay in New England. Her fears are justified: her aunt, uncle, and all of her cousins except for one drown in a river accident. She and her cousin, Ephraim, who is a few years younger than her, are bound out as indentured servants to a homesteader raised by Indians. Livy is supposed to help out his wife and care for the children. But she ends up being sent to educate a village of Indians, the ones that raised her master, how to spin cloth. As the time passes, she begins to wonder if she is falling in love with nineteen-year-old Rising Hawk, her master's brother by adoption. Livy is determined never to marry - her mother died birthing her. But she may have to listen to her heart instead of her head for once. And when her survival depends on it, she may have to trust her life to Rising Hawk. This was a wonderfully written historical novel that I reccomend to teenagers who enjoy stories set in the past.

Walk a Mile in My Shoes: A Book About Biological Parents for Foster Parents and Social Workers

For social workers and for foster parents
The collaboration of experienced social workers Judith Lee and Danielle Nisivoccia, Walk A Mile In My Shoes: A Book About Biological Parents For Foster Parents And Social Workers is a powerful, meaningful, 85-page treatise on understanding the feelings of biological parents and their children when children must be transferred to foster care. A "user friendly" guidebook to easing the transition and helping all parties understand one another better, Walk A Mile In My Shoes is highly recommended both for social workers and for foster parents engaged in a necessary, difficult and sometimes painful process.

What a Trip!

What a Trip!
What a Trip! is a Bring-It-All-Together book for set 2 of the Ready, Set, Read series of books. There are five books that the child reads to learn the word families being reviewed in this particular book. Word families being reviewed include: ip, et, og, ub, an, & and. There are two main things that I really like about this series. The first is the use of word families and a controlled vocabulary to teach /reinforce reading skills. The other is the story itself. It is a cute story about a bear and a lion playing together in a sandbox, using their imaginations to go on a trip. It is an interesting and funny story. My son enjoyed reading it the first time and still choses to read it. The books that go with this set are: The Tan Can, The Best Pets Yet, Pip and Kip, Frog Knows Best, and Bub and Chub.

WONDERFUL BOOK for FOSTER CHILDREN!
This interactive and easy to read book, with colorful illustrations, explains several aspects of foster care. A foster girl named Sarah explains what a foster family is and some of the reasons why children are placed in foster homes. She reassures foster children that being in foster care is not their fault. Sarah talks about some of the feelings and questions she had when she first went into foster care. Sarah even discusses topics such as what to call foster parents and what a Guardian ad Litem is. I think this book is a wonderful resource for foster children and foster parents! -Cynthia Miller Lovell (author of The Star: A story to help young children understand foster care, and Questions & Activities for The Star: A handbook for foster parents)

Whistle-Stop West (Orphans Journey)
Published in Paperback by Chariot Victor Pub (March, 2001)
Author: Arleta Richardson
Average review score:

A Delightful Story of Simple Trust in God
A very delightful and touching story portraying the hopes and aspirations of a group of orphans in their search for a happy home. The story reflects the simplicity of children and their trusting nature in the lives of these orphans. The story also exposes the harsh realities of this world through the thoughts, motives and attitudes of the various adults in wanting to adopt them.

What impresses me most is the trust of the children in God in spite of all the difficulties and their readiness to face the challenges in life because they are confident that God will be their helper.

An interesting and easy to read story and one that I did not find easy to put down the moment I started reading because I was curious to know the outcome of the children in the various homes that adopted them. Children will enjoy this book. So will adults.

The Wilds of Whip-Poor-Will Farm
Published in Paperback by Owl Communications (August, 1992)
Average review score:

great book for animal lovers
My daughter (6yrs old) really enjoyed this book. She loves to hear stories about animals. I read it aloud to her before bed each night and she couldn't wait for the next chapter. I also enjoyed this book because the author showed such an appreciation for nature. She clearly believes in being in touch with nature but not intruding. Quietly observe the wilderness. It was beautifully written.
